PLANT SCIENCE AT GLANCE
·
Dr. Norman
E. Borlaug is the pioneer of Green Revolution & was awarded Nobel Peace
Prize in 1970.
·
Rice, wheat
and maize are cereal crops while buckwheat & amaranthus are pseudocereals.
·
Wheat and
maize show hypogeal germination but soyabean & chickpea show epigeal
germination.
·
Application
of fertilizers with irrigation water is known as fertigation.
·
Khaira
disease in rice is due to Zinc deficiency.

Ø Study of soil is known as pedology
Ø Water holding capacity is highest in clayey
soil but better aeration in sandy soil.
Ø Soil = 5% of OM(organic matter) + 25% soil
water + 25% soil air + 45% mineral/inorganic matter
Ø Study of soil à pedology (soil genesis)/ edaphology (soil in
relation to plant production)
Ø Clayey soil is the bank of plant nutrient.
Ø Naturally formed soil aggregate is ped and artificially formed soil
aggregate is clod.
Ø Red soil is due to presence of Fe.
